Paul Martin

Paul Edward Martin, 82, formerly of rural Fairfield, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.

The funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Eicher Mennonite Church northeast of Wayland, with the Rev. Dennis St. Lawrence and the Rev. Herb Yoder officiating. Burial will be in Eicher Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Hospice of Central Iowa, Grace Baptist Church of Chariton or Eicher Mennonite Church.

Mr. Martin was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Chicago, the son of John A. and Dena Koehler Martin. He married Anna Mae Graber Feb. 12, 1944. She died Nov. 23, 2001.

He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1940.

He was a lifelong farmer. He farmed in Ainsworth, Crawfordsville and Mount Pleasant areas. He then farmed in the Fairfield area for 30 years.

In the early 1970s he went to Ola, Ark., to volunteer at a boys' ranch.

He attended Grace Baptist Church. He also attended Faith Christian Outreach Church in Mount Pleasant where he was involved in children's ministry. As a child he attended First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.

He was a member of the Gideon Society and worked with prison ministries.

His hobbies included carpentry, and sharing jokes and telling stories with family and friends. He had a large garden and an apple orchard.

Survivors include one son, Roger Martin and wife Wilma of Macon, Mo.; two daughters, Cheryl Martin of Corvallis, Ore., and Jeri Pierce and husband Larry of Lucas; two brothers, George Martin of Wyconda, Mo., and Robert of Washington, Iowa; a twin sister, Ruth Wittmer of Springfield, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joe Martin.
