A telegram was receive in this city this morning announcing the death of Samuel BARNES, father of Mrs. Maggie L. BRANSON of this city. He passed away last night about twelve o'clock at the home of a daughter in Knawaha (note: in Hancock Co., IA).
Mrs. BRANSON, who has been at the bedside of her father for the past week, will arrive in this city during the night tonight with the remains, accompanied by her sisters.
The funeral will be held at the BRANSON home Wednesday. The hour has not yet been definitely decided. The deceased is well known in this city, having made his home here with his daughter for some time. He is a brother of Ben BARNES who resides on North Court street.

Samuel BARNES, a soldier of the Civil war and a resident of Farifield for many years, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. JUDD, in Kanawha (sic - Knawaha) Sunday. The body was brought to this city for interment. Services will be held at the home of Mrs. Maggie BRANSON this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Thos. Osborn.
Mr. BARNES was born in Mansfield, O., May 11th, 1832, and grew to manhood there. He was married to Sarah J. RAITT in 1856 and the young people came immediately to this city, which was their home until 1877, when they removed to Kansas. They returned to Fairfield in 1890, and the wife died here in 1895. They were the parents of six children, four of whom are living--F. J. BARNES at Geneva, Neb., Mrs. JUDD at Kanawha, Mrs. Georgia YOUNG at Richfield, Neb., and Mrs. Maggie BRANSON in this city. Mr. BARNES was a brother of Benjamin BARNES and Mrs. Guilan BEATTY of this city. He was a member of Company M, Fourth Iowa cavalry, in the Civil war and served three years and four months. The friends who have sympathized with through many years of ill health will regret his death.

Headquarters George Strong Post, No. 19, G.A.R.--January 2d, 1908.
WHEREAS, Death has again thrown his dark mantle over our post and taken from our midst our well beloved comrade, Samuel BARNES, late of Company M, Fourth Iowa volunteer cavalry, and we shall no more feel his hearty clasp until the great Commander shall have exalted us to that celestial clime where the pain of parting shall never more wring the heart with sorrow or crush our souls with dark despair. Therefore be it
RESOLVED, That while we feel that any words of ours will prove but little comfort to those in sorrow, still we offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family in its bereavement, and se commend it to Him who doeth all things well. Be it further
RESOLVED, That in the death of Comrade Samuel BARNES the post has lost a worthy comrade, his family an affectionate father, and the community an estimable and patriotic citizen, and that in token of our respect to the memory of our departed comrade, a copy of these resolutions be sent to his family, recorded in the records of our post, and published in the city papers.
