One dead, four hurt in crash

One man was killed and four persons injured in a one-car accident northeast of Fairfield at 1 a.m. today.

Fatally injured was Robert Luzerne BARBER, III, 28, Leisure Living Estates trailer court, who was reportedly killed instantly.

BARBER was a passenger in a car driven by David Lyon, 29, 604 S. Main, who is a patient at Jefferson County Hospital, where he was reported in satisfactory condition this morning.

The other three passengers in the car were James Day, 28, 311 W. Adams; Douglas Meyer, 23, 411 N. Fourth; and Debra Kessler, 311½ W. Adams.

Day and Meyer were taken by air care helicopter to University Hospitals in Iowa City where they were listed in critical condition this morning.

Kessler was also taken to University Hospitals, making the trip by ambulance. A hospital spokeswoman said this morning that she was still undergoing treatment and no condition report was available.

Reports by investigating officers said the car was westbound on the Salina blacktop about 4½ miles east of the Pleasant Plain road when the driver lost control. The care ran into a ditch, slid sideways before it flipped and traveled about 43 feet in the air, landing on its top.

All occupants were thrown from the vehicle except one. Reports said the person still partially in the car was pulled to safety when fire broke out under the hood of the vehicle.

The Fairfield Fire Department was summoned to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished. None of the others was endangered by the fire. Officers said the 1957 model Chevrolet was totally demolished.

The accident was investigated by state troopers and officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

BARBER is the third highway accident victim in Jefferson County this year. Michael Klett was killed in a one-car accident east of Fairfield Feb. 18; and Lisa McLain was fatally injured in a two-car collision north of Libertyville March 5.

Services for Robert L. BARBER, II, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. D. O. Van Dyne officiating.
