OBITUARY

OSCAR A. BANTA

Oscar A. BANTA was born October 3, 1867 at Salem, Iowa and passed away Feb. 8, 1930 at the Jefferson county hospital in Fairfield, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 5 days. He was the son of William V. and Mary Ann BANTA and was one of a family of seven children, five of whom preceded him in death, leaving one brother Albert A. BANTA of Salem as the only surviving member of this old Quaker family who had been pioneers in the Quaker settlement at Salem. At the age of eight he was stricken with inflammatory rheumatism and was unable to walk until thirteen years of age. About eleven years ago illness forced him to resort to a wheel chair. During those years he has been a familiar figure on the streets of Fairfield coming and going in his chair. He was a patient and cheerful sufferer and since Thanksgiving has been confined to his bed. The end came after a number of acute heart attacks.

Oct Oct. 28, 1891 he was united in marriage to Martha B. RIGBY of Cottonwood, Iowa. To this union were born six children three of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife and the following children. Mrs. Neil M. RANDELL (sic - RANDALL), of Chicago; W. Merrill BANTA, of Downer's Grove, Ill.; Blanche at home and two grandchildren, Mary Jane RANDALL and Shirley Lou BANTA. Funeral services were held from the Hoskin's funeral home on Sunday afternoon with Dr. U. S. Smith of the First M. E. church in charge, assisted by Rev. Wyatt of the Mission. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery. The pall bearers, who were close friends and neighbors of the deceased were F. E. Duncan, James McCroey, Bert Sinn, Ed Meneely. A V. Frazey and Roy Hill.
