OBITUARY

MARY C. BALL

Mary Jane CAMPBELL was the daughter of John and Eliza TEMPLETON CAMPBELL. She was born July 10, 1850 in Greenfield, Ohio and was called home Oct. 28 1931 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 18 days. This pioneer family journeyed to Iowa in the Autumn of 1856 coming as far as Mt. Pleasant where the 2 railroad stopped then only wagon and carriage. Fairfield was a thriving village, houses to rent were at a premium hence they spent a few months with the Dunwoody family, Ohio friends, in a small house where the Gamble store stands. Renting was looked upon almost as a disgrace in those days, so the father soon purchased the property where Miss June Chidester lives. The following autumn they moved to a farm in Black Hawk township, near the Moyer church and in this neighborhood she spent her girlhood days, until the family moved to the new farm just north of town where Wm. DuBois now lives. Mrs. BALL attended the first term of school in the Old Franklyn school building and later on Axline University where she met young Wm. C. BALL whom she married June 27, 1872 and to them, two children were born, Cora Anna and John Franklyn.

Mr. and Mrs. BALL resided five miles west of town for a few years then at the death of Mrs. BALL's father they purchased her old home, living there until moving into town where they established the home on E. Kirkwood. This home has dispersed hospitality and good cheer to friends and strangers throughout the year. Next to her family and home, Mrs. BALL loved and was devoted to her church. She never tired of working for it and shared in its activities to the very last, entertaining delegates to the state Synod the previous week. She was always deeply interested in community affairs being a member of the City Library Board from its organization, the College Auxiliary, League of Woman voters, the Woman's Club, Walton Club, the Ladies Improvement Association which group worked for years beautifying Central and Howard park. The Chautauqua was dear to her heart and she only missed attending two sessions. Mrs. BALL was preceded in death by her husband Wm. C. BALL who passed away March 28, 1923 at the age of 78 years and her son Frank J. who died in Jan. 1889 aged 13 years. A daughter Cora, two brothers, Edgar CAPBELL Los Angeles, Cal., Frank H. Central City Neb, and many nieces and nephews are left to mourn her going.

This loved aunt, good friend and neighbor will long be remembered for the joy and happiness she shed along life's pathway. She loved life and kept so young in spirit yet she was ready and willing to go when God called her. Impressive funeral services were held Friday afternoon Oct. 30th at 3:30 o'clock in the First Presbyterian church, conducted by Dr. Gilbert Voorhies assisted by Rev. J. I. Dool. A mixed quartet composed of Prof. Carl G. Melander Mrs. R. C. Norman, Mrs. Raymond Bradley and Prof. Harold Smith very beautifully sand "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Gilbert Voorhies. Prof. Melander sang "Crossing the Bar." Members of the church organizations to which Mrs. BALL belonged sent many baskets of lovely garden flowers that were beautifully arranged by Mrs. E. A. Davies, Miss Thomas, Miss Esther Snook and Mrs. S. L. Machesney. Many other floral offerings sent by loving relatives and friends were banked about the casket. The pallbearers were Arthur Jordan, Wilson Reed O. E. Kirby George BALL, Thomas Hunt and John BALL. Interment was in the beautiful Evergreen cemetery beside her husband and son. Ushers at the church were William Stever, Ward, Hunt, Walter Bean and Walter Louden.

Among the out-of-town friends who attended the last rites were Dr. George Hinkle and daughter Jessie, Harbard; Miss Lela Trowbridge, Corydon; Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Lewis, Dr. and Mrs. S. A. Spilmon and Miss Mary McElroy of Ottumwa.
