Sudden Heart Attack Fatal To Ernest BAILEY

Ernest P. BAILEY, retired insurance agent and former chief of the Fairfield fire department, died suddenly at his home about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday evening.

He had been working in his yard at the family home, 207 N. Court street, and had gone inside to read the paper. He suddenly slumped over in his chair.

An emergency alarm was received at the fire station and a resuscitator was rushed to the BAILEY home but he failed to respond to emergency treatment. A doctor pronounced him dead on his arrival.

BAILEY had been treated for a heart disorder since January but he was in his usual health yesterday and his death was sudden and unexpected.

64 Years

He had been a resident of this community for 64 years, had been an insurance agent for 31 years until his retirement in March of this year, and served as a member of the Fairfield fire department for 19 years.

BAILEY joined the department in 1910 and served the community until 1929 when he retired as chief.

When he first joined the department the fire equipment was horse-drawn. He was a member when the city acquired its first motorized equipment in 1916.

After clerking in local stores as a young man, BAILEY and O. A. Harper purchased the Gaines Hardware store which they operated as the BAILEY and Harper Hardware store for four years. He then sold his interest in the firm in 1929 to enter the insurance business.

Last rites will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral home with the Rev. J. Roland Crandall officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Born in 1884

Ernest P. BAILEY, 76, was born Aug. 6, 1884, at Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of John and Belle FLIGG BAILEY. He moved to Fairfield with his family when quite young and was reared and educated in this community.

He was united in marriage on Oct. 9, 1907, to Carrie PARSONS who passed away in January, 1921. He was married June 6, 1937, at Fairfield to Blanche BANTA who survives.

He was a member of the Methodist church where he was active in the Baraca class. He was also a member of the Masons, Eastern Star, B.P.O. Elks, Isaac Walton League and the Chamber of Commerce.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Bruce, who resides in Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Earl BAILEY, Florence, Ariz.; and three sisters, Mrs. David ROACH, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Bessie CHAMBERS, Portland, Ore.; and Gladys BAILEY, Birmingham.

Firemen Answer Emergency Call

Members of the Fairfield fire department answered two alarms late yesterday afternoon, one of them for a small blaze at the Thrifty Wash laundromat, and the other an emergency alarm.

They were called to 207 N. Court where E. P. BAILEY, retired insurance agent, had suffered a heart attack at his home. He failed to respond to emergency treatment and was pronounced dead when the doctor arrived.

Only a small amount of damage was caused when flames broke out in the wall over one of the driers at the laundromat.

The fire alarm was turned in at 5 p.m. and the emergency alarm at 5:55 p.m. The second alarm was the 61st alarm of the year.
