An Old Soldier Gone.

Alexander BAILEY, sr., died in this city Thursday from asthma. He was stricken with paralysis in October and had been confined to the house since that time. Deceased was born in Center county, Penn., February 22d, 1832, and grew to manhood there. He was an earnest student in his earlier years, and graduated from Eldredge academy, a noted school in his native state. July 13th, 1854, he was married to Sarah Jane GILCHRIST, who survives him. Five children were born of this union, and all are now living, James B., John C., A. J., jr., and Miss Mary residing in this city. At the outbreak of the War of the Rebellion Mr. BAILEY enlisted in Company A, Eighth Pennsylvania reserves, and was in the service of his country three years and three months. He was wounded at the battle of Mechanicsville, Va. In 1868 the family removed to Van Buren county, this state, where the father engaged in farming, but has resided in Fairfield for many years. Mr. BAILEY was a man of excellent education and more than ordinary ability. He was a persistent reader and was possessed of an unusual fund of information. Those nearest him esteemed him for many excellences of character, and will sympathize with his family in his loss. The remains were interred in this city Saturday, Rev. J. P. Doud and Ref. J. F. Magill conducting the funeral services. the remains were interred as was benefitting those of a soldier, under the direction of George Strong Post, G. A. R.

Death of Alexander J. BAILEY.

Alexander J. BAILEY died of paralysis Thursday, December 31st, and the funeral was held at his home in this city last Friday afternoon, Rev. J. P. Doud and Rev. Dr Magill conducting the services. Mr. BAILEY was born in Center county, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1832, and grew to manhood in Armstrong county, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Eldridge academy. He was married to Sarah Jane GILCHRIST in 1854, and to them were born four sons and one daughter, all of whom survive him. At the breaking out of the civil war he enlisted in the Pennsylvania Reserve, Co. A, 8th regiment, served his country three years and three months, and was wounded at the battle of Mechanicsville, Virginia. He moved to Iowa in 1865, settling in Van Buren county, his occupation being that of a farmer. Some years afterwards he moved to Jefferson county and has been a resident here ever since.
