G. Herbert ATHERTON, former fire chief and chief of police for the city of Fairfield, died in his sleep early this morning at his home, 901 S. Second street. He was found by his wife when she got up. It is believed he passed away about 4 a.m.

Before serving the city ATHERTON operated his own automobile agency and garage in Fairfield. He was a member of the Christian church.
G. Herbert ATHERTON, 75, was born Feb. 5, 1886, at Lennius, Mo., the son of Alfred and Margaret BOYD ATHERTON. The family moved to Jefferson county when he was a small boy and he spent the remainder of his life in this community.
He was united in marriage on Oct. 4, 1911, to Effie Mae CRAWNER (sic - CROWNER), who survives. A nephew, Truman BAILEY, Fairfield, also survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Olive BAILEY.
