Death of Clarkson ASHMEAD.

Announcement of the death of Clarkson ASHMEAD, at his home in this city the 10th inst., was made in the last Ledger. He was born in Washington county, Penn., June 8th, 1829, grew to maturity there and was married to Jane McCUTCHEON, who survives him, January 8th, 1852. They were the parents of five children, the two eldest dying in infancy. Those living are Mrs. Addie M. SHELBY of this city, Benson C. ASHMEAD of Bloomfield and Uel J. of Keosauqua. The family came to Jefferson county in the '50s. Mr. ASHMEAD was a soldier in the Civil war, a member of Company E, Thirteenth Iowa infantry, and contracted disease in the army from which he never fully recovered and which doubtless hastened his death. His last illness was brief. He was able to go to church the Sabbath preceding his death, partook of communion and seemed to enjoy the privilege very much. Mr. ASHMEAD united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1850. His life was that of a consistent christian, and he was greatly esteemed by all who knew him as a man of undoubted integrity, sterling honesty and excellent citizenthip (sic). The remains were interred Thursday morning. Rev. J. E. Corley conducted the services and George Strong post, G. A. R., attended the services in a body.
