May 09, 2005Hazel Ellery Turner Montgomery, 102, a lifelong resident of Fairfield, died at 5:10 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield, where she had been a resident since 2002.
A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for July 16, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church.
Memorials have been established to First Presbyterian Church and Parkview Care Center.
Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In accordance with Mrs. Montgomery's wishes, her body has been willed to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Mrs. Montgomery was born May 5, 1903, in Fairfield, the daughter of James E. and May Bean Turner. She married John McDowell Montgomery Jan. 5, 1927, in Fairfield. He died Jan. 8, 1958.
She graduated from Fairfield High School and Parsons College in 1927 with a degree in Latin.
She and her huband lived in Mount Pleasant for seven years where he managed the J.C. Penney store.
In October 1934, along with her parents, the Montgomerys purchased the old Court Hotel, which stood at the corner of Briggs Avenue and Main Street. The hotel was renamed The Turner Hotel. Her husband managed the hotel, while she operated the kitchen and dining room.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was a past president of PEO Chapter HA. She was also a member of the Wit and Wisdom Club, Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae, and the Jeffferson County Hospital Auxiliary.
She enjoyed traveling. She took trips to Europe twice, enjoyed a cruise to Nassau and had visited all but two of the United States.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Shipman and husband Walter; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
