Driver critically hurt

Clifford James PAXTON, 24, Route 1, was listed in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City where he is being treated for injuries sustained in a traffic accident southeast of Fairfield Thursday night.

He was first taken to the Jefferson County hospital by ambulance and later transferred to Iowa City.

Officers at the scene of the accident said PAXTON apparently suffered head injuries, possible chest injuries and broken bones.

The accident took place at 9:10 p.m. three miles southeast of Fairfield on the Glasgow Road.

Reports said a car driven by Harold Franklin Keller, 60, was traveling east on the Glasgow Road and signaled for a left turn at the crossroads.

The car driven by PAXTON following behind attempted to pass the car ahead, struck the left rear and glanced off. PAXTON's vehicle then ran into the ditch and hit a tree head-on.

The PAXTON car was described as a total loss and there was damage to the left rear and side of the Keller vehicle.

The accident was investigated by officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
