ELIZABETH MESNER

Elizabeth MESNER, daughter of Michael and Mary MESNER, was born near Germanville, Dec. 1, 1848 and died Feb. 24, 1936. She was the youngest of seven children as well as the last surviving member of her family. Three brothers, John, Philip and William, and three sisters, Susanah, Sara, and Mary, preceded her to their resting places.

At the age of three and one-half years she, with her parents, moved to the farm southwest of Pleasant Plain which for 66 years was the MESNER home. In 1918 she removed to the residence where she spent her remaining years.

She received her early education in the rural school on her father's farm and for some time attended Whittier College which at that time was located at Salem. Here she qualified herself as a teacher and for a very short time she taught in the public schools of Jefferson County.

In early life she interested herself in religious work and became a member of the church of the United Brethern (sic). After the closing of the local church of that denomination she attended the services of the Walnut Creek Meetings of the Society of Friends. She with her sister Mary formally joined the church in January 1907. Until approaching age prevented, she was faithful in church attendance. At one time she taught a Sunday school class, and in the early days of the Young Peoples' Society of Christian Endeavor she was vitally interested in its activities. She loved her church and had an abiding faith in its mission and message.

For many years her's (sic) were the manifold duties that come to the homemaker on the farm. This work she accepted gladly and performed efficiently. To a great extent there fell to her the care of her father, mother, uncle, and eldest brother in their final years. Here again she showed a faithfulness and devotion that was often commended by those close to her.

As a member of a pioneer family she faced at first the hardship of a new country and then the constant change that came within a century of change. Whether that change be in the form of mechanical invention or in the realm of social, educational, or religious thought, changes so great in extent as to be almost startling when viewed in perspective, through it all she made adjustments with a calm confidence in the future of the things to which she devoted her life.

To mourn her death she leaves two sisters-in-law, Mary HESTON MESNER of O'Neil, Nebr., Nancy EMRY MESNER of Central City, Nebraska, her nephews, Clyde MESNER, East Pleasant Plain for many years resident in her home, and eleven other nieces and nephews all residents of Nebraska and many other relatives as well as a large circle of friends. To each of them her loss will be keenly felt and for them her place will be hard to fill.

Funeral services at Friends church, Rev. Haworth pastor conducted the services. Interment in Walnut Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Hodson, Frank Hoskins, Harry Lamansky Clifford Cole, Leonard Pickard, Paul Rynor.
