Emma Kennedy, 87, of Keosauqua, died at 5:22 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at the Van Buren County Hospital following a brief illness.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bryon Wixom officiating. Burial will be in Christy Cemetery, east of Mount Sterling.

Open visitation will be at 3 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Memorials to Keosauqua Public Library and Christy Cemetery can be left at the funeral home, the church or mailed to the family at 2506 160th Ave., Donnellson, IA 52625.

She was born April 18, 1918, in West Plains, Mo., the daughter of John Franz and Lena Arnold Keller. She married James Franklin Kennedy Jan. 22, 1941, in Keokuk. He died Dec. 23, 1990.

Mrs. Kennedy attended country school in the Cantril and Milton areas and graduated from Milton High School in 1936. She worked as a nanny and governess in Keokuk and as a nurse's aide at the Van Buren County Hospital for several years.

She lived most of her life in the Mount Sterling area until 1986 when they moved to Kahoka, Mo. She moved to Keosauqua in 1993.

She was a member of Keosauqua United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five sons, James Kennedy of Peoria, Ill., John "Jack" Kennedy and wife Linda of Donnellson, Kenneth Kennedy of Bonaparte, Randy Kennedy and wife Judy of Mount Sterling and George Kennedy and wife Linda of Mount Sterling; three sisters, Marie Pierce of Keosauqua, Ila Mae Howard of Roseburg, Ore., and Martha Wellburn of Donellson; two stepbrothers, Richard Shapell of California and Edward Shapell of Arizona; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Karen; one brother, Joseph Keller; and two stepsisters, Ruth Koontz and Edna Lotta.
