OBITUARY

MRS. FRANK DUNCAN

Following a lingering illness of many months, Mrs. Frank DUNCAN entered into eternal rest at the Jefferson County Hospital Sunday evening, July 5, 1942 at 9:00 o'clock.

Hilma Elenora (sic) ANDERSON was born May 5, 1865, in the Four Corners community, the daughter of A. G. ANDERSON and his wife, Christine Sophia. She was one of a family of eight children. She passed her 77th birthday anniversary last May. As an infant she was baptized in the home of her parents by the Rev. Hokan Olson, then pastor of the Lutheran church in that community. As a girl she was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Munterville, Iowa. Her public school education was received at the Dallner school house about five miles northeast of Salina.

On October 16, 1889, she was united in marriage to Frank Ellsworth DUNCAN. The wedding took place in the home of the bride's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gust JOHNSON, in Ottumwa. In mutual helpfulness and love Mr. and Mrs. DUNCAN have walked life's pathway together for nearly 53 years. Ten children were born to them, three of whom died in infancy. For about 18 years following their marriage they lived in Ottumwa. Then in 1908 they moved to a farm in the Richwoods community where they lived for six years. In 1914 they moved to Alden, Iowa, where they farmed until they moved to Fairfield in the year 1920.

Mrs. DUNCAN was a faithful and devoted wife and mother. She was energetic, caring well for her home and family. Her children hold cherished memories of her devotion and self sacrifice. Her quiet faith, her calm patience, and her uncomplaining spirit characterized her even through her prolonged period of illness and failing strength.

Mr. and Mrs. DUNCAN had the privilege of celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary in October, 1939, with all of her children present to enjoy the happy occasion with them.

Mrs. DUNCAN suffered a stroke three years ago. Since that time she has failed gradually. For the last ten weeks she has been a patient at the hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers. Only one sister survives her, Mrs. Gust ANDERSON of this city. She is survived also by her husband and seven children; four sons and three daughters. They are Walter of this city; Preston of Alden, Iowa; Mrs. Clarance SWITZER of Fairfield; Mrs. Verner WARMAN of Chicago; James Hobert of Hubbard, Iowa; Frank of Chicago; and Mrs. Greer RAMSAY of Fairfield. There are 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon July 8 at the Hoskins Funeral Home with Dr. E. A. Piper officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Glen Bates and Mrs. William Niebert accompanied by Miss Mary Virginia Johnson. The pallbearers were three sons: Walter DUNCAN, Preston DUNCAN and Frank L. DUNCAN, and three son-in-laws: Clarence SWITZER, Greer RAMSEY (sic) and Verner WARMAN. Burial was in the Richwoods cemetery.
