W. F. DOWNING DEAD IN WEST
Telegram Today Brings News From Artesia,, California --Burial Here

W. F. DOWNING, an old resident of Fairfield who went to Artesia, Calif., about a year ago to make his home with his only daughter, Mrs. L. I. NICKEL, is dead, according to a telegram received this afternoon by J. E. Hickenbottom.

Mr. DOWNING, who was about 60 years old, lived on a farm 3½ miles northeast of Fairfield until three or four years ago when he moved to the city. Several years ago he was stricken with paralysis of the throat and since then he was scarcely able to talk and had difficulty in eating. His wife has been dead for some years.

Mr. DOWNING was a member of the Odd Fellows and Moose lodges.

The body will be brought here for burial.

DOWNING BURIAL HERE NOT UNTIL SEPTEMBER

The body of W. F. DOWNING, old resident of Jefferson county, who died in Artesia, Calif., May 22, has been placed in a receiving vault there temporarily and will be brought here for burial next September, according to word just received here.

DOWNING REMAINS TO ARRIVE TODAY
Funeral Services of Former Fairfield Man Held Here Tomorrow.

The body of W. F. DOWNING, a former resident of Fairfield, who died at Long Beach, California, about a month ago, will arrive in Fairfield this afternoon. It will be immediately taken to Kerrick Undertaking Parlors where funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment will be in the Richwoods cemetery.

Mr. DOWNING is well known in Fairfield, having lived most of his life here until two years ago when poor health made it necessary for him to go farther West. He took up his residence at the home of his daughter at Long Beach, Calif., where he resided until his death.

A sister, Mrs. E. D. HOOPES of Albia, who was also formerly of Fairfield, will arrive in the city today to attend the funeral.

DOWNING RITES HELD HERE TODAY
Former Fairfield Resident Is Laid To Rest At Richwoods Cemetery.

Funeral services for William F. DOWNING were held this afternoon at 2 oclock from the Kerrick undertaking parlors in charge of Rev. C. L. Tennant of the First Methodist church. Interment was in Richwoods cemetery.

William F. DOWNING, the son of Anthony and Harriet DOWNING was born on a farm three miles northeast of Fairfield, May 8, 1861. Until about a year ago he lived all of his life in this county living on the farm until seventeen years ago when he came to Fairfield to live with his sister, Mrs. E. D. HOOPES. About a year ago he moved to Artesia, Calif., to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Clara NICKELL.

Mr. DOWNING was married to Miss Clarinda HUPP of Batavia, who died May 8, 1890.

Those who survive him are a daughter, Mrs. Clara NICKELL of Artesia, Calif., a brother, Thomas of Independence, Kansas, and a sister, Mrs. E. D. HOOPES of Albia.

Mr. DOWNING was converted during the Sunday meeting which were held in Fairfield and united with the First Methodist church. Since that time he attended church regularly until his affliction kept him away.

He was also a member of the Odd Fellow and Moose lodges.
