…. Died--December 23d, at his residence, three and one half miles northeast of Fairfield, Mr. A. DOWNING, in the sixty-fourth year of his age. Mr. DOWNING has been a resident of this county since its earliest settlement. In Mr. DOWNING we loose (sic) one of our best citizens. He was a man of uncommon physical strength. He went to California during the gold excitement and through exposure it is believed that he contracted the diseases that culminated in his death. He was twice married. He leaves his family in good circumstances.
