Samuel SHAFER, 86, lifelong resident of Jefferson County, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at University Hospitals in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Keith Lingwall Officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Raymond Funeral Home.
During his many years as a farmer he had a keen interest in soil Conservation. He was one of the first cooperators with the Jefferson County Soil Conservation District, he was an officer in the Farmers Union and served as a director in rural school system.
Samuel SHAFER was born Dec. 22, 1894, in Buchanan Township. He was the son of Jacob and Henrietta BERG SHAFER. He attended rural school at Richwood Community school and farmed until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War I.
The family home is on Route 2. For the past year he had been a patient at Pleasant Manor in Mount Pleasant.
His marriage to Marie L. BURGUS took place Dec. 14, 1919, at Burlington. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Jacob B. SHAFER, Mount Pleasant, and Wesley J. SHAFER, Fairfield; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a brother Frank SHAFER, Fairfield.
