CUNNINGHAM,--In Fairfield, Iowa, April 15, 1877, of Lung Disease, Mr. James A. CUNNINGHAM, aged 62 years 4 months and 1 day.
Mr. CUNNINGHAM had been for a long time confined to the house by the disease which finally terminated his life. He was patient under his affliction, and was always pleased to see the friends who visited him. The last few days of his life on this earth were comparatively peaceful, and death came quietly upon him. Mr. CUNNINGHAM was one of the oldest citizens of our town. He was born in Virginia and removed thense (sic) at an early age to Ohio. From there he came to Iowa in 1840, settling in Fairfield, July 22, 1845; he was married to Miss Lucy CUMMINGS, by whom he has had four children. They were all, except Albert, in attendance upon their father during all or a part of his sickness. Mr. C. was highly esteemed by his fellow citizens, and during his residence in Jefferson county held various offices of trust and profit. His remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of citizens, among whom were over sixty persons who had settled in the county prior to 1850. An effective and feeling discourse was preached by Rev. H. E. Wing.
