JOHN E. CUMMINGS PASSED AWAY HERE LAST EVENING.

John Edward CUMMINGS, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of this city, died last night at eleven o'clock at his home at 301 South Court street.

His death was due to a genral (sic - general) breakdown, for his health has been failing him for some time.

Mr. CUMMINGS was the son of William and Sarah CUMMINGS and was born in Lexington, Virginia, on December 3rd 1832. He came to Fairfield in 1843, where the greater part of his life has been spent with the exception of about twenty years that he lived in Ottumwa. He was connected with the hardware business here and was a man who always worked for the best interests of Fairfield. He is a veteran of the civil war, being a member of Co. G, 3rd cavalry and during life was a member of the Presbyterian church.

He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Mrs. E. N. IRWIN (sic - Ella N. McCLURE IRWIN), and one daughter, Mrs. J. W. BROWN, of this city. He also leaves one brother, S. A. CUMMINGS, of this city.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock (sic) from the late residence in charge of Dr. W. E. Parsons and the remains will be interred in Evergreen cemetery.

Many friends will extend their sympathy to the sorrowing family at this time.

John E. CUMMINGS

JOHN E. CUMMINGS, a highly respected resident of Fairfield passed away Thursday night at eleven o,clock (sic). He was eighty-four years of age and had been in poor health for some time.

Funeral services were held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Dr. W. E. Parsons. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. CUMMINGS was a son of William and Sarah CUMMINGS, born at Lexington, Va., December 3rd, 1832. He came to Fairfield in 1843, and, with the exception of twenty years spent in Ottumwa, was a resident of this city. He was a veteran of the Civil War serving in Co. G (sic - Roster shows Co. F), Third Cavalry.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Ella IRWIN December 18, 1899 who survives him. He is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alice BROWN, and a brother, S. A. CUMMINGS, of this city.

Many friends join the bereaved relatives in mourning the death of this good man.

Admin note: Buried in Lot Old.P.071. He was married three times, first to Martha G. KNIGHTON with whom he is buried; second, to Hannah KIRKPATRICK who is buried in Ottumwa, IA; and third, to Ella McCLURE IRWIN who is also buried on the same lot with John and Martha.
