-Paid Obituary-

Wendell Dale PIRTLE, 82, of 3000 West Madison, #317, SunnyBrook Assisted Living, died at 10:48 p.m. April 3, 2005, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8th at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Harlan "Frosty" Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, with military rites.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present. Memorials may be made to SunnyBrook Assisted Living or First Christian Church in Packwood.

Wendell was born May 12, 1922 in Bloomfield, Iowa the son of William Floyd and Fauntella E. NICHOLS PIRTLE. He married Mary Frances ALTMAN August 6, 1944 in Packwood. She died October 4, 1994.

Wendell graduated from Davis County High School in Bloomfield then attended Iowa State University for one year until he enlisted in the Air Force. He served in WWII as a B-24 bomber pilot. He flew many overseas missions including over Normandy on D-Day. After his tour of duty he was a flight instructor in Waco, TX. He then served as a member of the Air Force Reserves for a number of years.

He and his wife had lived in Fairfield since 1954. They owned and operated the Packwood Grocery Store for 2 years. He also owned Pirtle Cabinet Shop and built custom cabinetry for many years. He worked for Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown on Line One, the nuclear energy line from 1958 until the line closed in 1974. He then transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal and worked there until he retired in December of 1982.

He was a member of The First Christian Church in Packwood and a member of the 52 Club of Packwood.

He was a kind, quiet, gentle, devoted loving husband, father and friend. His hobbies included wood working and he had made many grandfather clocks and other furniture items. He also enjoyed rock hunting on family vacations and arrow head hunting and raising Irish Setters with his daughter. After his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include one daughter, Anita Ann PIRTLE LOVING and husband Robert of 406 Heatherwood Circle, Fairfield. Two granddaughters, Abaigeal "Abbi" Ann LOVING, 16 and Aubreann Mary Frances LOVING, 9. They were his pride and joy. One nephew, Randy WESTBROOK of Fairfield and two nieces, Rebecca PRIOR of Eau Claire, WI and Rachel MAY of Mt. Pleasant, IA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister Juanita WESTBROOK, one infant brother and an infant son, Patrick Owen PIRTLE.
