OBITUARY

Richard J. GUDGELL was born June 6th, 1843, and died April 18, 1921, aged 77 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was born near Frankford, Ky., in which place the family lived until Mr. GUDGELL was 14, at which time the family moved to Livingston county, Mo., removing thence to Jefferson county, Iowa, in the spring of 1861.

Mr. GUDGELL enlisted in Company F, 3rd Iowa cavalry, serving till close of war, 4 years of service being rendered. He re-enlisted in the regular army and served three years against the Indians.

He was married to Phoebe A. HENDERSON April 21, 1876. To this union 8 children were born -- Jackson GUDGELL, Love M. COPELAND, Robert B. GUDGELL, having preceded him in death, Licurgus GUDGELL of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. Laura Lee GREEN of Ottawa, Kansas, Henry Clayton GUDGELL of Fairfield, Mrs. Lila B. NICHOLS of Burlington, Iowa, Mrs. Susie B. GREEN of Burlington, Iowa, who with his wife and eleven children survive him.

Mr. GUDGELL will be remembered as a good soldier and never shirked his duty as he saw it. He was one of the ready men when his country called, being a volunteer. He was a good neighbor, a kindhearted man, ever ready to help the needy and those in distress. One who served his God by serving his fellow man.

The fmaily will miss a good husband and one of the best fathers who always saw that his family was well provided for. He was a lover of little children and always enjoyed their company -- laughed when they laughed and suffered when they suffered and helped to bear their burdens as one who knew. Surely the Christ who knows meant it when he said, "Whatsoever you do to the least of these, my brethren, you also do it unto me."
