-Paid Obituary-

Dale E. Buchanan, 86 of Fairfield died at his home on Tuesday, March 29, 2005. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Orpha and one brother. The body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Main Street in Fairfield, Iowa on Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Richard Wallarab officiating. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in the Old Cadet Chapel Columbarium in West Point, New York. Family visitation and meal will be held after the memorial service in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church.

Dale was born November 20th, 1918, at Chanute, Kansas to Guy R. and Hazel Coonrad Buchanan. He married Orpha Ackerman on May 29th, 1942 in the Old Cadet Chapel at West Point, New York.

Dale graduated from high school in Chanute in 1936, from Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri in 1938 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1942. Additionally, he earned a Masters of Science degree in applied mathematics at the University of Iowa in 1967.

Dale was a U.S. Army veteran retiring as a Colonel of artillery after 21 years of service. He served in Europe during World War II, in the occupation of Japan, and in Korea during the conflict there. During his military service he graduated from the Command and General Staff School, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College.

He taught mathematics at West Point Military Academy for 3 years and served on the staff and faculty of the Command and General Staff College for 4 years. After retiring from the military he taught mathematics at Parsons College for 10 years and afterwards worked at French-Reneker Associates Consulting Engineers for 8 years.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter: Colonel (Ret) Tim Buchanan of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Stanley Buchanan of Blakesburg, Iowa, and Janet Pitt of Culpeper, Virginia. Also surviving are eleven grand-children, Christi, Brad, Stacey, Kimmie, Kristyn, Shawna, Cary, Erika, Tressa, Jennifer and Justin, and 16 great grand-children. Also surviving is a brother, Paul Buchanan of Lubbock, Texas.

Colonel Dale Buchanan was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Elks Club, the Military Officers Association of America and the USMA Association of Graduates. Dale had served on the Fairfield Planning and Zoning Commission, the Jefferson County Public Health Advisory Committee and briefly on the Veterans Affairs Commission.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield, Iowa or the American Heart Association.
