Robert E. Pool, 83, of Douds, died at 9:40 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2005, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The funeral was held today, at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Danny Cary officiating. Burial with military rites by John Hyson Reneker, Post No. 494, American Legion, Douds, was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds.

Memorials to Douds First Responders or White school restoration fund may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 14024 Elm St., Douds 52551.

Mr. Pool was born Feb. 19, 1922, in the White community between Douds and Birmingham, the son of Rilla and Mary Alice Ranard Pool. He married Helen Avery Oct. 12, 1949, in Fairfield. She died Jan. 27, 1997.

He attended White country school.

Mr. Pool served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Portland during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He farmed in the Douds-Birmingham area and worked for 30 years at The Dexter Company, retiring in 1985.

He and his wife moved to Douds in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Douglas Pool of Douds and Gary Pool and wife Debbie of Fairfield; one daughter, Marla Carr of Marengo; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ester Leydens of Keosauqua.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Joe, Wilson, Roscoe and Frank Colin Pool; and four sisters, Jessie Schleeter, Erma Hootman, Juanita Pool and Caroline Channel.
