LAURA MAHON, TEACHER FOR 46 YEARS, DIES
Hundreds of local students have benefitted by her ability.Laura Mahon, 82, well known Fairfield school teacher for 46 years passed away this morning at 10:30 a.m. at her home, 311 West Adams Street, after a serious illness of a few hours. She had been in poor health for the past several months. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Weston Behner funeral home in charge of Rev. William R. Yingling. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Thousands of Fairfield students have benefited by Miss Mahon’s teaching ability. She was always a favorite among students. Her last assignment was principal of the Roosevelt grade school, from which she retired in 1937. She had taught continually for 46 years in Fairfield schools. Miss Mahon was a member of the Presbyterian church. She devoted much of her life to the teaching profession. She was born in Fairfield June 21, 1860, the daughter of the late John and Jane Mahon. Miss Mahon is survived by three sisters, Anna Mahon, Fort Madison; Emily Strubel, Fairfield; Ellen Monfort, Lockridge; and one brother, Emmett Mahon, Ottumwa. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
