Ferne Irene Hadley Morgan, age 90, of Fairfield died at 2:10 A.M. Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Parkview Care Center, where she had been a resident for the past 2 years.

She was born August 27, 1914 at home north of Fairfield. She was the daughter of Emmett and Myrtle Heald Hadley. She attended the one room country school near her home and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1932. She graduated from Parsons College in 1936 with a double major in English and education. She taught school in Fairfield and LeGrande near Marshalltown, and directed plays at the high school level.

In 1938 she married Chester Morgan of Swedesburg, Iowa. They lived in Mt. Pleasant and Indianola, and for the largest part of their married life in Iowa City, where Chester was a professor in the college of business and head of the economics department at the University of Iowa. Ferne was a homemaker and dedicated mother to her only daughter Marsha.

Ferne was active in the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, the University Club for faculty wives, and the P.T.A. at the Iowa City schools. She also was a substitute teacher in the Iowa City schools and for many years worked at the Younkers Store in downtown Iowa City.

Ferne was preceded in death by her husband, and after his death resided for over 20 years with her sister Frances Hadley of Fairfield.

Ferne is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marsha and Gary Smith of West Des Moines, 2 granddaughters: Laura (Brian) Walthart of Iowa City and Meg Smith of Orlando, Florida; 1 great grandson Jackson Walthart of Iowa City and her sister Frances Hadley of Fairfield.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in the Swedesburg Lutheran Cemetery at Swedesburg, Iowa.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the service at 11:00 A.M.

Memorials may be made to the Swedesburg Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
