Page 2, Column 5Funeral Services Held This Morning For Suicide Victim
Funeral services for Sylvester PECK, about 40, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl PECK, 4 miles south of Brighton, who committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart with a 12 gauge shot gun, were held this morning at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's church in Pleasant Plain. Father Paul Wetzstein was in charge and burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
PECK left the home of his parents at 10:00 a.m. Thursday to go rabbit hunting and when he failed to return by Friday morning, a searching party was formed and his body was found in a timber located about one half mile from the home. He had been in poor health the past year and it was thought he had shot himself in a fit of despondency.
He was born on September 16, 1904, one of a family of ten children. He had worked in Rock Island some time ago but the past four or five years had been farming on the home farm.
Survivors besides his parents are five brothers:: (sic) Vincent PECK of Rock Island; Robert of Indianapolis, Indiana; Cpl. Maynard in the Philippines; Joseph, near Pleasant Plain and William, at home; and four sisters: Mrs. Charles DRISH of Brighton; Mrs. Ray LAMANSKY of near Brighton; Louise PECK of Rock Island and Laurine, at home.
The body was taken from the F. A. Hoskins Funeral Home in Brighton to the residence last evening.
