JOHN KURTZ, WALNUT TWP., PASSES AWAY
Prominent man had lived all his life on same place

John F. KURTZ (sic - John S. KURTZ), 67, prominent Walnut township farmer, passed away this morning at 2 a.m. at his home west of Pleasant Plain. He suffered a stroke Wednesday morning from which he failed to recover.

Mr. KURTZ had spent all his life on the old home place near Germanville. Tuesday the family commenced moving to the Mose Hoskins farm which they had just purchased. It was while the moving was going on that he sustained the fatal stroke.

He was the son of John and Susan KURTZ and was one of 12 children. He was married twice -- first to Miss Bertha KAUFFMAN who passed away in 1903 -- and again to Mrs. Clara GELSKI PECK. Three children were born to the first union and nine -- two of which passed away in infancy -- to the second union.

Mr. KURTZ is survived by his wife ten children and a step son.

The children are Mrs. Virginia OTT and Mrs. Martha OTT of Davenport, Mrs. Angeline VOORHIES of Maquoketa, John of Brighton, Mrs. Gertrude WEENIKE of near Merrimac, Myron, Gerald and Raymond of near Pleasant Plain, and Donald and Frances at home. Tommy PECK of Fairfield is the step son. There are several grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Jacob KESSEL of Pleasant Plain; Mrs. Dan MANNHARDT of East Pleasant Plain and Mrs. Lizzie FRITZ of Burlington and by two brothers, Anthony and Frank of East Pleasant Plain.

His parents and the following brothers and sisters preceded him in death: Philip, Joe, Peter Mrs. Susan KASKA, Mrs. Agnes OLIVER and Sister Barbara KURTZ.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at Saint Joseph's church in charge of Rev. Fr. Seidel. Burial will be in the nearby cemetery.
