KESSEL Funeral To Be Saturday

Raymond J. KESSEL Sr., 72, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson County Hospital. He was taken to the hospital Tuesday from the Nelson Nursing Home where he had been in failing health the past two years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Cletus Madsen officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at East Pleasant Plain.

Prayers for a Christian Wake will be held at the Raymond Funeral Home at 7:30 this evening.

Raymond J. KESSEL was born Jan. 7, 1897, near Pleasant Plain, the son of Jacob and Mary KURTZ KESSEL. He was reared and educated in Jefferson County and was married Jan. 30, 1918, at Pleasant Plain to Elizabeth LEDGER. She died Oct. 25, 1960.

He married Susan DOXSEE Dec. 27, 1961 in Moline, Ill. She died Feb. 18, 1969.

KESSEL, who farmed in the Pleasant Plain community for many years, was a veteran of World War I. He was employed at the Burlington Ordnance Plant during World War II; and the Alcoa Aluminum Plant in Bettendorf for 13 years.

Later he retired and moved to Fairfield where he served as city assessor and court bailiff. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and a 30-year member of the American Legion and FOE.

Survivors include one son, Raymond Jr,, (sic) Fairfield; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; three step children, Mrs. Harriet MILLER and Harry DOXSEE, both of Moline; and Donald DOXSEE, Waubay, S.D.; also seven step-grandchildren and a brother, Leonard KESSEL, Ollie.

He was preceded in death by one brother and a sister.
