JAMES A KURKA
Fairfield

James A. KURKA, 93, of Fairfield, IA passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield with Father Nick Adam officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield immediately following the service.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield and last until the time of service. Memorial contributions in Jim's honor may be directed to the St. Mary Catholic Church or the Fairfield Lions Club. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

James KURKA was born October 14, 1924 in Fairfield, IA to Edward and Beatrice SCHRACK KURKA. He was raised in Fairfield where he attended elementary and high school. Shorty (sic) after graduating he entered the United States Army where he grew up quickly, fighting for his country in the European Theater during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned home and began classes at the University of Iowa with an emphasis on sales.

After completing his degree at the U of I he entered the workforce. Throughout his career Jim had several different sales jobs from toys to insurance. He spent several years away from Fairfield while working out of state, but returned to the place he called home, where he would retire and remain for the rest of his life. Jim was active in the Fairfield Lions Club which included a role as president and district governor. He also was Lion of the Year in 1974 and 1975 as well as receiving the Melvin Jones Award, Warren Coleman Award, and the International Presidents' Commendation. Jim was also a member of the Fairfield American Legion, Fairfield VFW, St. Mary Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Eloise JOHNSTON, Robert KURKA, and Joseph KURKA.

Left to honor his memory is his brother, Richard KURKA of Fairfield, IA; two sisters-in-law, Martha KURKA and Sharon KURKA; three nephews, Jerry, Kevin, and Jason, as well as many extended family and friends.
