OBITUARY

Charlotte CHARLES, daughter of Barclay and Sarah JOHNSON, was born in Highland county, Ohio, 10th month, 12th, 1821, and died at Grinnell, Iowa, 9th month, 25th, 1910.

According to the ceremony of Friends, of which both were members, she was united in marriage to Thomas CHARLES of Richmond, Ind., 9th month, 23, 1841, at Fall Creek Meeting. To this union were born six children, Elvira CHARLES; B. J. CHARLES of Whittier, Calif.; Sarah C. BUFKINS of Pasadena, Calif.; Melissa C. JOHNSON of Grinnell, Ia.; Mary C. STALKER of Richland, Ia.; J. H. CHARLES of Fairfield, Ia., all of whom are living except the eldest daughter (sic - Elvira), who died at the age of thirteen years.

After this marriage, they settled in Hamilton county, Ind. They moved to Pleasant Plain, Iowa, in 1851, where they resided until his death, 8th month, 23, 1896, after which she made her home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Aaron STALKER. Although she had been rather frail for some years, she enjoyed her usual health until a week before her death, when she had a slight paralytic stroke.

During her short illness she was conscious much of the time and often mentioned every member of her family, as well as many relatives and friends. However, a second attack resulted in her death at which time she was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Henry JOHNSON, of Grinnell.

Void of any pretense or display, the sincerity of her simple consistent life falls like a benediction on all who have known her.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fred Comfort of Oskaloosa.
