VELMA STEPHENSON DIED THIS MORNING

The many friends of Miss Velma STEPHENSON were saddened to hear of her death which occurred at 9:16 o'clock this morning at the hospital after an illness of five weeks with typhoid fever.

Miss STEPHENSON was brought home from New London where she was an instructor in the public schools, just five weeks ago today, and taken to the hospital for treatment, and until Saturday her relatives and friends had hoped of her recovery. Sunday morning she became unconscious and a consultation of doctors was called and it was found that meningitis had developed. This disease together with the fever caused her death.

Velma STEPHENSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. STEPHENSON, was born October 22, 1891, in Mulvane, Kansas, and came to Fairfield with her parents in 1899. She attended the public schools of this city, graduating from the High school with the class of 1909. Following her graduation she became a teacher in the Jefferson county schools, having taught at Plum Grove, Batavia, Brookville, and Perlee. This past fall she taught the fourth and fifth grades in the New London schools until she was taken ill with the fever.

Besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. STEPHENSON, two sisters Charlotte and Byrl, and other relatives are left to mourn her loss.

Miss STEPHENSON was a charming and lovable girl and made many friends wherever she went. She was a member of the First Methodist church of this city, and held membership in the Yeoman, Fraternal Aid and Rebekah lodges.

The funeral services will be held at two o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, and burial will be in Evergreen (sic) cemetery.

Note: Although there is a gravestone for her on her parents' lot (2nd.121), it appears to be a memorial only. Evergreen cemetery has no record of her burial. It is likely she is buried in the neighboring cemetery, Old Fairfield City Cemetery; the two were oftentimes confused for one another due to their proximity and lack of clear boundaries between them.
