Page 3, Column 5DROWNED. -- A death by drowning occurred in Cedar Creek, near Crawford's coal bank, on Thursday of last week. About 2 p.m., several of the men at the bank proposed taking a swim. Among them was John SHOE, who had lately been employed at the bank. He crossed the bridge and waded out in the water about twenty feet, when suddenly he sunk. He arose and sank three times in sight of some of the men, but on account of the high water nothing could be done to rescue him. As soon as possible skiffs and grappling irons were sent for, and the creek dragged until late that night, and on Friday and Saturday. The latter day his body was found but a few feet from where he sank. A coroner's jury was summoned who brought in a verdict of death by accidental drowning. The body was brought to Fairfield Saturday night, a coffin procured, and the interment took place in the old cemetry (sic) Sunday morning. The deceased came to Fairfield from Princeton, Mo, about five weeks ago. He was a married man, but had been separated from his wife for some time. His friends at Princeton were telegraphed to, but for some reason failed to come.
