OBITUARY

ABIGAL SCANNELL

With the passing of Mrs. Abigal SCANNELL who died at her home 405 West Briggs, Sunday morning at 6:45 after an illness of five weeks, another brave woman, who faced the hard ships of pioneer days has gone to her reward.

Mrs. SCANNELL was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael CASEY and was born in Ireland November 1st 1846.

When 14 years of age she crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a wooden sailing ship and came to the home of her brother in Potsdamn, New York (sic).

She was wed to Florence SCANNELL of Laurence Co., New York.

May 7th 1869 and two years later came to Iowa and settled on the prairie ten miles north west of Fairfield.

A few years later they moved to a farm 3 miles west, where Mr. SCANNELL died Feburary (sic) 13 1906.

They were the parents of 12 children all who grew to men and womanhood. Later five sons preceded her in death, Florence and Dennis of Davenport, W. E. of Muscatine, J.W. of Desmoines and Joseph of Iowa City.

Those who are left to mourn her loss, are T.M. and R.M. of the West, Anna of Davenport, Paul of Iowa City, Emmet of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Wm THOMA of near Batavia and Hugh at home. Mrs. SCANNELL was tenderly cared for by her children in her last days.

Mrs. SCANNELL also leaves 36 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her passing.

Althoug (sic) she had almost reached her 88th milestone she was able to be around her home and attend to her light household duties until stricken with her last sickness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic church at 9:00 o'clock of which the deceased was a devoted member.

The pall bearers were her two sons Paul and Hugh and four grandsons Charles BRUCKMAN of Rock Island, Ill., Florence and Joe SCANNELL of Davenport, Wm. THOMA Jr. of Batavia.

She was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery (sic - Old Fairfield City Cemetery).
