HillsboroWilliam D. WHITAKER, 88, of Hillsboro passed away on March 13, 2018 at Sunnybrook of Mount Pleasant (note: in Henry Co., IA). He was born on May 30, 1929 to Samuel Victor and Leona Joy SEMLER WHITAKER in Hillsboro, Iowa. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1946. Bill married Ruth CLARK (sic - Doris Ruth CLARK) on August 22, 1954 at the Hillsboro Baptist Church. Together Bill and Ruth raised four children on the family farm outside of Hillsboro. Ruth passed away on September 21, 2008.
Bill spent his career as a farmer, he raised cattle, sheep and hogs and was a beekeeper. He served two terms in the Iowa National Guard, spending six weeks each spring on flood relief. He was an active member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, deacon, and in 2004, took a mission trip to Nicaragua. Bill also served as Soil Conservation Commissioner, a longtime member of the Van Buren County Hospital Board, a member of the Belmont Lodge No. 541, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and other affiliated masonic bodies. He was a hard worker, an avid reader, and enjoyed fishing. Bill was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
He is survived by three sons, Clark (Norma) WHITAKER of Hillsboro, Iowa, John (Lorrie) WHITAKER of Polk City, Iowa, Bruce (Becky) WHITAKER of Bentonsport, Iowa; a daughter, Susan (John) ZULK of Spencer, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Pat BECKER of Elgin, Illinois; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Hillsboro Baptist Church with Pastor David Glavin officiating. Burial will follow the service in Hillsboro Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 18, 2018, Masonic Rites will take at (sic) 2:00 P.M. with family present to greet friends from 2:30 - 4:30 P.M. at Pedrick Funeral Home - Keosauqua. Memorial contributions in William's honor may be directed to the Hillsboro Baptist Church or Van Buren County Hospital. Online condolences may be directed to www.pedrickfuneralhome.com.
