Almost a Centenarian.

Jesse BYRKIT, who died at Red Oak Thursday, was in the ninety-fourth year of his age and was said to be the oldest person in that city. Mr. BYRKIT was born at Asheville, N.C., December 13th, 1805, and in early childhood removed with his parents to Montgomery county, Ohio, and grew to manhood near Dayton. In 1823 he traveled farther west and made his home on a farm in Marion county, Ind., near Indianapolis. Here, in 1829, he was married to Isabella B. WOODS, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and who was born at Cynthiana, Ken., in 1808. Mrs. BYRKIT died in this city in 1872. In 1839 the young people removed to Vermillion county, Ill., and in 1844 to Fairfield, where the husband and father resided without interruption until 1890, when he went to Red Oak to make his home with a son, Frank M. BYRKIT, where his last days were spent. Mr. BYRKIT was the father of nine children -- eight sons and one daughter -- all but one of whom grew to maturity. John BYRKIT, the eldest of the family, died in this city in 1853, William A., a minister of the Methodist church, in 1863, and Mrs. Hannah RANDLE, the daughter, in 1896. Five sons survive the father -- Rev. Geo. W. BYRKIT of West Chester, A. R. BYRKIT of this city, F. M. BYRKIT of Red Oak, M. L. BYRKIT of Fairfield, Neb., and C. S. BYRKIT of Des Moines.

No one who knew Jesse BYRKIT during his life of half a century in Jefferson county could fail to bear testimony to his excellences and worth as man and citizen. He was quiet and unassuming in his manner and scorned public exhibition of any of the virtues, but the honesty of his purposes, the integrity of his motives were so apparent in every thing he did that he won and retained the confidence and esteem of all who came in contact with him. He lived to a ripe old age and passed away in peace and comfort.

Mr. BYRKIT's remains were brought to this city, where other members of the family are buried, for interment Friday. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. I. O. Kemble, the pastor.
