James Morrow HIGGINS was born August 1, 1929 in Mt. Pleasant, IA to James and Helen "MORROW" HIGGINS. He grew up in the Mt. Pleasant area where he graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Upon graduation he joined the United States Army. The Army played a major role in Jim's life. He was sent to basic training in Fort Knox, KY before being sent to Germany where he joined the 421st Army Band as a percussionist. His unit worked to clean up the Dachau Concentration Camp in Dachau, Germany. His path led him to be a Chaplain's Assistant in the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. While working at the hospital he met a young nurse named Carol MUSCARELLI. The two quickly fell in love and were married in 1952. They became loving parents to a baby girl, Cathy. Jim was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in March of 1955. Jim, Carol, and Cathy returned to the United States and settled back in Mt. Pleasant where they continued to grow their family. Jim began working for Stith & Devinger in Mt. Pleasant before accepting a position at Parsons College as a purchasing agent. In 1966, Jim and the family moved to Fairfield, IA. When the college closed, Jim became a sales representative for NAPA and Right Away. Jim had a way with people. This gift served him well in his many years working with the public, and allowed him to make many longtime friends. Jim retired in 1994 but began making deliveries for the Hy-Vee Pharmacy, which he did for over 20 years. Jim was active in several organizations including St. Mary Catholic Church, Fairfield Country Club, Elks, American Legion, and the Walton Club. The love for percussion he found in the army was something that he maintained, and put to good use. He played drums for the Walton Cloub and passed his rhythm on to his children, eventually spanning four generations of drummers. Even with all the things he was involved in, he still found time to get in a round of golf. Jim HIGGINS was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His caring heart and big personality left behind a legacy that will be remembered by his family and friends for many years to come.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Carolyn HIGGINS (2009) and one son, Garry HIGGINS (2015).
Left to share his legacy are his children; James (Rachel) HIGGINS of Atlanta, GA, Robert (Michelle) HIGGINS of Fairfield, IA, Cathy (Archel) MORELL of Baltimore, MD, Ann (Scott) HANSHAW of Marietta, GA and Eddie HIGGINS of Fort Myers, FL; thirteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara PIXLEY of McClain, VA; one daughter-in-law, Linn HIGGINS, as well as many extended family and friends.
