Allie Lu DUNLEVY

Walker, MN

Allie Lu DUNLEVY, 91 of Walker, Minnesota, formerly of Fairfield, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2017, 7:00 PM at her home surrounded by loving family members.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker, Minnesota on Saturday, September 2, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.

Allie Lu was born 2 months premature in Minto, North Dakota on April 26, 1926, the daughter of Harold and Mary Jane (JOHNSON) PHELPS.

Allie Lu graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1944. She was selected as the most "Representative Woman" in her high school graduating class by the school faculty.

Allie Lu attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for her first 2 years, and then transferred to the University of Iowa hospitals for 3 more years of nurse's training. While in Iowa City, she was elected "Honorary Cadet Colonel" in a school-wide election. One of the duties of his honor was assisting the Commander and Governor of Iowa in review of the troops.

Allie Lu's Iowa City years were followed by the next 2 years at Washington University in St. Louis, where her husband James was in medical school. There she received a bachelor's degree in Nursing Education. While in St. Louis, she was head nurse on a 40-bed male surgical floor of Barnes Hospital.

Allie Lu's husband, James graduated from medical school in 1951. They then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1951, where she managed a large physician's office for one year.

Allie Lu and Jim returned to Iowa City where she then taught nursing at University of Iowa Hospitals in 1952-53.

In 1953, Allie Lu and Jim moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where she helped her husband establish the Fairfield Clinic. Fairfield was their home for the next fifty plus years. These years included working at her husband's clinic, teaching nursing students at Parson's (sic) College, and being the mother to three daughters.

Allie Lu married her high school sweetheart, James DUNLEVY, on June 12, 1949. They were married for 68 wonderful years, raising three daughters, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Allie Lu was a loving, caring mother and wife, who was actively involved with her family and in her community. She enjoyed many activities including gardening and flowers (with her own personal greenhouse), family vacations, family sporting and musical events, and various church activities. She served as a girl scout leaders (sic) for many years, PEO offices at every level, and was a confirmation teacher for First Lutheran Church in Fairfield for many years.

Allie Lu and her husband retired to Leech Lake in Walker, MN on a full-time basis 10 years ago. This was a very special place to her, since her father bought property on the south shore of Leech Lake in 1934, where she would regularly spend a portion of every summer. She and Jim built a small, winterized home on the property 10 years ago, where they both wished to lived out the remaining years of life.

Survivors include: her husband of 68 years, James DUNLEVY; eldest daughter, Lucinda CAVE of Cleveland, Ohio, who recently retired from nursing education at University Hospitals in Cleveland; middle daughter, Janey PATERNO (Joe) of Portland, Oregon, recently retired as a pediatric physical therapist; and youngest daughter Amy ODGREN (Steve) of Two Harbors, Minnesota, assistant to the bishop of the NW Synod of the ELCA.

Grandchildren include: Captain Matt CAVE (Julie) of Pensacola, FL; Amy CAVE of Cleveland, OH; Molly PATERNO of Los Angeles, CA; Tony PATERNO of Portland, OR; Britta HOLLAND (Mark) of Little Canada, MN; Allison KELLY (Joe) of Plymouth, MN; Nils ODGREN (Jackie) of Luck, WI. Great-grandchild is James HOLLAND, 3.

Allie Lu's cremains will be spread at the family lakeside property on the south shore of Leech Lake early next spring.
