Friday, October 2, 1987Farmer, 75, dies in corn dryer
A Fairfield area farmer suffocated today when he apparently slipped inside a portable corn dryer and was covered by corn.
Richard CUBBAGE, 75, Route 4, was pronounced dead at the accident scene by Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Terry Sutton. Sutton said CUBBAGE died of suffocation.
CUBBAGE was working on the farm of his step-grandson, Brian MATSON, one mile north of Perlee on the Pleasant Plain Road.
Jefferson County sheriff's officer Frank Bell said CUBBAGE's step-daughter, Betty MATSON, who lived in a nearby mobile home, noticed that CUBBAGE had corn up to his chest in the grain dryer. Bell said Ms. MATSON climbed into the dryer in an effort to get CUBBAGE out of the dryer but she couldn't move him by herself.
Bell said CUBBAGE told Ms. MATSON that he was trying to move the auger when he fell into the dryer. Bell said Ms. MATSON turned off the machinery and left to find help. The first person she found was Wayne Billingsley of rural West Point who was working on a nearby farm.
When Billingsley and Ms. MATSON returned to the scene they couldn't see CUBBAGE, Bell said. They decided to run the corn off of the dryer and when the corn level got lower CUBBAGE's body could be seen in the dryer, according to Bell.
Fairfield firemen used a saw to cut through heavy mesh in order to free CUBBAGE's body. The sheriff's office was called at 9:12 a.m. and the Fairfield Fire Department was called at 9:18 a.m.
Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home.
