Raymond P. SCHLEGEL, 79, of Milton, died at 12:50 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at home (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).
In accordance with his wishes, the body has been cremated. A memorial gathering/luncheon to celebrate his life, will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 17 at the Heritage Center in Milton.
Memorial gifts can be made to Hospice of Ottumwa or to the family and mailed to the family at 203 E. Maple St., Milton 52570.
Mr. SCHLEGEL was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Aaron and Lillian LUTTY SCHLEGEL. He married Joanne JOHNSON June 16, 1962, in Moline, Illinois.
Mr. SCHLEGEL grew up in Pittsburgh and spent the first half of his adult years in Davenport. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Milton.
Mr. SCHLEGEL had trained as a diesel mechanic in the United States Army and used his talent in his years of work at Linwood Mining & Minerals in Buffalo and Dohrn Transfer in Rock Island, Illinois, and finally retired from McCarthy Improvement Co. in Davenport.
He was a member of Oak Hills Gun Club, the Izaak Walton League, Russell-Strait Post No. 483 and was a lifetime member of the NRA.
His pastimes included training his numerous hunting dogs, hunting, fishing, finding morel mushrooms and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Joanne, he is survived by: son, Steve KAZENSKE (Melody) of LeClaire; daughter, Paula VENEMA (Michael) of Des Moines; brother, Bill SCHLEGEL of Pennsylvania; sisters, Donna FARRELL of Pennsylvania, Marie McDINE of Delaware, Kathleen NEHILLA of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Raymond P. SCHLEGEL, 79, of Milton, died Friday, April 21, 2017.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Milton Heritage Church in Milton, with a lunch following.
Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is handling arrangements.
