John 'Jack' HESSELTINE

John "Jack" HESSELTINE, 92, of Richland, died Wedneseday, April 12, 2017, at SunnyBrook Assisted Living in Fairfield.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Rick Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Fell Cemetery near Libertyville.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, immediately preceding the service, at the church.

Memorials for Hospice Compassus and the American Legion can be left at the church of mailed to the family at 1915 Jackpine Loop, Fairfield 52556.

Gould Funeral Home of Richland is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. HESSELTINE was born Oct. 9, 1924, in rural Brighton to G. Franklin and Dora Mae PARKER HESSELTINE. He married Evelyn J. SPRAY April 8, 1950, in Salem. She died March 29, 2014.

Mr. HESSELTINE grew up in the Washington, West Chester areas where he attended school.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines.

Mr. HESSELTINE had several occupations, including heavy equipment operator and mechanic for Kaiser Construction Co. He worked for Sasseen Plumbing and Heating in Richland before opening his own plumbing shop, and most recently, he worked for Pekin community schools as a custodian and bus driver.

Mr. HESSELTINE enjoyed all outdoors activity, but particularly hunting mushrooms, and fishing for catfish. He also enjoyed puzzles and tinkering.

He was a longtime member of the Friends church and most recently attended First Church of God.

Survivors include: children, Joy LANGE (Mike) of Pella, Jonnie HESSELTINE (Nancy) of Fairfield and Lonnie HESSELTINE (Chris) of Richland; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; an infant child; an infant great-grandchild; sisters, Katherine HARRIS, Mae MORROW, Gladys LOWE; and brothers, Wayne, Rex, Alvin, Dallas, Gale, Sam, Harold "Bubbles," Gus "Swede" and Robert.
