Harry D. Levy, 81, of Washington, Iowa, died today, Thursday Dec. 23, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

A celebration of life service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington. A private family committal service will be held at a later date in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at the funeral home, with family present from 2-6 p.m.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of Washington County.

Mr. Levy was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Kalona, the son of Morris and Lillie Etenson Levy. He married Carolyn Ann Fry June 9, 1949, in Iowa City.

After graduating from Kalona High School in 1940, he attended Washington Junior College and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

He owned and operated the Mose Levy Steel Company, established in 1958. He served as postmaster in Washington for 11 years after his appointment to the post by U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Mr. Levy served as chairman of Washington County Democrats for 15 years. He had been a member of Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, Washington City Council and the board of directors of Washington Public Library. He was a member of Washington Golf and Country Club and AMVETS in Richmond.

Survivors include his wife; six children, Mike Levy and wife Mary of Washington, Deborah Larson and husband Stephen of Winona, Minn., David Levy and wife Peggy of Urbandale, Marty Levy and wife Christine of Santa Clara, Calif., Jennifer Levy of San Francisco, Calif., and Rebecca Levy of Decatur, Ga.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Martin Levy of Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Doris Mintzes; and two brothers, Joe and Myron Levy.
