Lela Essie WHITE, 96, of Eldon, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa (note: in Wapello Co., IA).
The funeral is 10 a.m. Thursday at Cranston Family Funeral Home in Eldon.
Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to Eldon United Methodist Church or Cardinal Elementary Library. Friends can sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Mrs. WHITE was born June 1, 1920, in Wapello County, the daughter of E.L. "Buck" and Veda MACE CANNY. She married Warren CURTIS. They divorced. She married Keith HOCKERSMITH, who died. She married Bill WHITE, who also died.
She attended school and grew up in the Eldon area.
Mrs. WHITE worked with children at Cardinal school as their elementary librarian for more than 20 years. She also stood in as the "Elementary Dentist" helping young children through the experience of losing a tooth.
She had many part-time jobs, including working as bookkeeper at the local lumberyard.
Mrs. WHITE was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church, and loved to help decorate the tables for special occasions.
In her free time, she enjoyed bingo, pitch, and pinochle. She was a collector of Lady Head Vases, strawberries, and Cardinals.
She cherished being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always played the role of caregiver.
Survivors include: three children, Stanley CURTIS with Lillian of Mt. Pleasant, Myrna FLIGG with Roger of Clive, and Marguerite HOCKERSMITH of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands, Keith HOCKERSMITH and Bill WHITE, she was preceded in death by: her parents; and six siblings, Mary LONGCOR, Lydia BARRETT, Robert CANNY, Jack CANNY, Dee CANNY, and Don CANNY.
