"Leader" Newspaper - Chariton, IA - 31 Jul 1962Mrs. Rhoda Brown, 96, long-time resident of Chariton, died Friday at the
home of Mrs. Esther Patterson, in Osceola.Services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Miley Chapel with the Rev.
Paul C. Ellis assisted by the Rev. Clarence Newby, officiating. Interment
was in the Chariton Cemetery.Surviving are one son, Charles Brown, of Chariton, and another daughter, Mrs
Mae Baker of Osceola. Also surviving are a number of brothers, sisters and

"Leader" or Herald-Patriot" Newspaper - Chariton, IA - Aug 1962Rhoda Catherine Brown, daughter of Nelson John and Catherine Swanson, was
born in Jefferson County, near Fairfield, Iowa, March 21, 1866. She passed
away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Patterson, near Osceola, Ia., on July 27, 1962. She was 96 years, 4 months
and 6 days of age.When a child she moved with her family to Lucas county, where she grew to
womanhood. On Feb. 4, 1885, she was united in marriage to Ira W. Brown of
Chariton, and they established a home near there. After a few years they
moved to Clarke county, and lived near Osceola for 27 years. In 1917 the
family moved back to Lucas county, and resided there until Ira passed away.After the death of her husband, Mrs. Brown made her home in Chariton. When
her health failed she went to live in Osceola with her daughter Mrs. Mae
Baker. Since last September she had been at the home of another daughter,
Mrs. Robert Patterson.Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and three
sisters; also by four sons, Marion Monroe and Frank Carlisle who died in
early childhood; William Christopher Brown, who passed away July 24, 1921;
and Ira Leonidas Brown, who died on Feb. 2, 1957.She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Charles Brown, of Chariton, and two
daughters, Mae Baker and Esther Patterson of Osceola. There are also two
daughters-in-laws, Gladys Brown of Chariton, and Charlene Brown of Des
Moines; and a son-in-law, Robert Patterson of Osceola.She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-granddaughter. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Long
of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Eugenia Foster and Mrs. May Banta of Des Moines.
There are also nieces and nephews and many friends.She was a member of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine, the Rebekahs, and
the Legion Auxiliary.Grandma Brown, as she was affectionately called by many, was a devoted
Christian from girlhood. A member of the Christian Church of Chariton, she
attended church regularly as her health would permit. She enjoyed the church
activities, and her Bible was precious to her. She has always been a loving
and devoted mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by all.Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, 1962, at the Miley Chapel.
Officiating were the Rev. Paul Ellis, assisted by the Rev. Clarence Newby.
Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
