Wesley James SHAFER

Wesley James SHAFER, 89, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Gregory Friedrich officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Visitation, with the family present, will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials can be made to First Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.raymondfuneralhomes.com.

Mr. SHAFER was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Fairfield, the son of Samuel and Marie BURGUS SHAFER. He married Lenore "Nonie" ERPS June 18, 1950, at St. John's Methodist Church in Davenport.

Mr. SHAFER was a 1944 graduate of Fairfield High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy 1945-1947. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Parsons College in 1949.

He was a life-long farmer and resident of Buchanan Township in Jefferson County.

Mr. SHAFER was a member of First Lutheran Church, and the Mississippi Valley Farm Business Association.

His accomplishments included, Master Farmers Award from Wallace Farmer Magazine in 1972, member of Jefferson County Republican Central Committee more than 20 years, received the Century Farm award in 2001 from Farm Bureau. He served on the REC/Access Energy Board and Church council and taught Sunday school.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include: wife, Lenore "Nonie" SHAFER of Fairfield; and two daughters, Sarah Beth HALSEY and husband Tony of West Des Moines, and Melissa Ann SHAFER of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and one brother, Jacob "Jake" SHAFER.
