Officers respond to gunshot victims in Packwood

PACKWOOD - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a possible shooting at about 10 a.m. Monday in Packwood.

The caller was reporting that Franklin NEFF, 79, had called and said that he had shot his wife and was going to kill himself, according to a press release from Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to 225 N. Main St. in Packwood. The deputies found Enola NEFF, 75, with a single gunshot wound to the head. She had died before officers arrived.

They also found Franklin NEFF suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. They provided first aid until the ambulance arrived. He died later in the day. A handgun was found next to Mr. NEFF.

With the help of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner, the deputies were able to confirm that Franklin made two phone calls to family and friends telling them he had shot Enola and was going to kill himself. During a search of the home, law enforcement also found a note written by Mr. NEFF. In it he indicated that he and Enola were suffering from some health issues and he didn't want them to be a burden on the family.

"The Department of Criminal Investigations was here [Monday] afternoon, and they were involved in the investigation with law enforcement," said assistant county attorney Pat McAvan. "Hopefully, we will be able to put all of the pices together soon and be able to get everybody answers as to what happened."

At this time, there is no indication that the public is in any danger.

No further information is available about the case at this time. The Ledger will provide additional information about this story as it becomes available.
