Illness Is Fatal To Roy W. HINSON, 77

Dr. Roy W. HINSON, 77, retired Fairfield optometrist and longtime businessman, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Marshalltown following an illness of several months.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Raymond Funeral Home to the church at noon Saturday.

A veteran of World War I, he moved to Fairfield in August, 1933, and was active in the business, civic and church activities of the community for many years.

Roy W. HINSON was born Feb. 27, 1896, at Richland. He was the son of Luther P. and Anna F. HINSON. He was reared and educated in the Richland Community and received his Doctor Optometry degree from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1917.

Dr. HINSON enlisted in the Armed Forces in August, 1917, served overseas in World War I, was discharged from service in 1919, and entered business at Brighton the same year.

He was married June 8, 1921, to Ruth G. WORLEY at Richland. She died May 8 (sic - 18th), 1973.

They moved to Fairfield in 1933 and operated a jewelry store and optometric practice on the west side of the square. He sold the jewelry store in 1946 and established his optometry office at 112 W. Broadway where he practiced until his retirement in August, 1963.

Dr. Hinson was a life member of the United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years and served on the church board.

He had been a member of the Fairfield Lions Club since 1934 in which he served as president in 1950, and as international counsellor.

He held the distinguished service medal, served as chairman of the Jefferson County Red Cross during World War II, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as chairman of its retail bureau; and was district commissioner of Boy Scouts of America.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Christian Business Men's Association which he served as president two years.

Dr. HINSON was president of the Iowa Optometric Association in 1957, served on the National Affairs Committee of the American Optometric Association for three years. He was president of the Midwest Optometric Conference and a member of the board of the American Optometric Foundation for three years. He also served as finance chairman for the Republican Party in Jefferson County three years.

Dr. HINSON is survived by three sons: Dr. Rex HINSON, Marshalltown; Dr. Daniel HINSON, Des Moines; J. Philip HINSON, Boston, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Kenneth BELTER, Elmhurst, Ill.; and ten grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, one brother and one sister.
