Clarence A. Meis
October 18, 2004Clarence A. "Huck" Meis, 89, of Keota died at 11:56 p.m. Saturday at Maplewood Manor in Washington, Iowa, where he had been a resident since September 1999.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mother Cabrini Catholic Church in Richland, with the Rev. Charles J. Fladung officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.
Open visitation at Gould Funeral Home in Richland will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be held at 7 p.m.
Memorials to Maplewood Manor, Mother Cabrini Church or the American Lung Association have been established.
Mr. Meis was born Jan. 25, 1915, in LeMars, the son of Joseph I. and Katherine G. Roerig Meis. He married Ethel C. Casper July 2, 1938, in LeMars. She died Dec. 18, 2002.
He grew up in LeMars, where he attended St. Joseph's Catholic School.
Mr. Meis worked as a farmhand and in a packing house before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Bracken in the Pacific Theater. He worked for the Plymouth County Road Maintenance Department before moving to Des Moines, where he worked for United Contractors of Des Moines for 20 years. He retired in 1977 and moved to Granville, then moved to Keota in 1995.
Mr. Meis was a member of the LeMars American Legion and the VFW in Granville and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Keota.
He was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed bowling, fishing and card games.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Morgan and her husband Larry of Richland; one son, James Meis and his wife Karen of Norfolk, Va.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray Meis of Crescent; and five sisters, Marian Abdalla of Fort Dodge, Margaret Grau of Littleton, Colo., Joan Van Steenwyk of Lakewood, Calif., Janet Olson of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Ruth Marienau of West Des Moines.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild; four brothers; and one sister.
