Sherry Lynn RILEY MANLEY

Sherry Lynn MANLEY, 54, of Fairfield, died 6:10 p.m., May 27th 2016 at home after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

As per her wishes, cremation will be accorded with burial of cremains at Abingdon Cemetery in Abingdon. Behner Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at The McElhinny House in Fairfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. MANLEY was born Dec. 15, 1961, in Fairfield, the daughter of Mervin Rex and Clara May SHEPHERD RILEY. She married Daniel MANLEY Sept. 6, 1985.

She is a 1980 graduate of Fairfield High School. She earned a bachelor of arts in art from the University of Iowa in 1984. She earned an associate of arts degree in nursing from Indian Hills Community College in 2012 and became a registered nurse the same year.

She was a member of the freshman honor society Phi Eta Sigma, 1981, at the U of I, and the community college honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, 2007, at IHCC.

She was a nurse at Life Solutions Behavioral Health in Fairfield and Ottumwa since 2011. She worked as a graphic designer at The Fairfield Ledger from 1993-2011, serving as lifestyles editor from 2006-07. Previously, she worked as a graphic designer at Automated Business Forms, and as a pre-school teacher at Bellevue Day Care Learning Center, both near Omaha, Neb.

She was runner-up in the Iowa Daily Newspaper Association Master Columnist contest for Class I Dailies in 2007.

She was a member of Chapter HA, P.E.O., and served as president 2011-2013. She was captain of The Ledger's Relay for Life team for several years.

Mrs. MANLEY enjoyed spending time at home with her family, antiquing, murder mystery novels, and classic television and movies.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel MANLEY, of Fairfield; one son, Trevor MANLEY, of Fairfield; one sister, Kathy VAN DE LAAR (Jan) of Abcoude, The Netherlands; one brother, David RILEY (May), of Redwood City, Calif.; her father's long-time companion Donna Daugherty of Fairfield; one uncle, Dean RILEY (Darlene DRAKE) of Fairfield; 14 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rex and Clara RILEY; grandparents, William C. and Nellie WILLIAMS SHEPHERD, and Gerald and Florence SCHOOLEY RILEY; seven uncles, John SHEPHERD, Ernest "Red" SHEPHERD, Finley SHEPHERD, Claude SHEPHERD, Earl SHEPHERD, Dwight RILEY and Verlyn Cloyce RILEY; three aunts Beluah COOP, Dora WIGGLESWORTH and Alice CROW; and one niece, Angela HARRISON.
