Darrell D. BARKER

Darrell D. BARKER, 86, of Dubuque, died at 5:25 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque (note: in Dubuque Co., IA).

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque. A private burial, with family, will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home in Dubuque. Visitation also will be 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday prior to the funeral at the church.

In lieu of flowers, a Darrell Barker Memorial has been established. Online condolences can be left at www.egelhofersiegertcasper.com.

Mr. BARKER was born March 14, 1930, in Fairfield, the son of Edward and Etola POTTOFF (sic - POTTORFF) BARKER. His mother died when he was 4, and Mary Florence ADAMS BARKER raised him and kept his birth mother's family in his life. He married Susan SEELEY Aug. 31, 1952.

He worked in the newspaper field for most of his life, starting out delivering papers for The Fairfield Daily Ledger after school during his high school days and fulltime for three summers. He worked at the University of Iowa newspaper in Iowa City for 17 weeks as a linotype operator, then moved on to work for newspapers in Maquoketa.

Mr. BARKER moved to Dubuque and worked for the Telegraph Herald for 38 years, working as assistant composing manager of the last 12 years. His last employment was with Econofoods for three years and Hy-Vee bakery department for six years.

He and his wife were camping enthusiasts and camped all over the Midwest. They wintered for a month in Florida for 15 years. He was league secretary and bowled for many years. He was a member of the Elks for more than 25 years.

Mr. BARKER was president of the International Typographical Union for two years.

Survivors include: his wife, Susan BARKER of Dubuque; three daughters, Debra BEDTKA and husband Tom of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Becky JAGIELSKI and husband John of Elgin, Illinois, and Sara HABICK of Dubuque; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth BOWERS of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and one sister, Carol AMRINE.
