Merle L. FARRIER

Merle L. FARRIER, 82, of Brighton died Monday afternoon, May 16, 2016, at Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Brighton United Church, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Hook Cemetery (note: in Washington Co., IA).

Visitation, with the family, will be 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Brighton United Church can be left at the funeral home, church, or mailed to the family at 401 N. Farmer St., Brighton 52540.

Mr. FARRIER was born April 20, 1934, in Brighton, the son of Archie Leo and Gladys Lucille RICH FARRIER. He married Janet E. SASSEEN April 8, 1956, in Packwood.

He grew up in the Brighton area on the family farm, graduated from Brighton High School in 1952 and attended Parsons College in Fairfield. He pursued his love of farming on the centennial farm where he was born. He operated Brighton Feed Store, worked at Perfex Manufacturing Company in Washington and later at R & R Donnelley Company in Mt. Pleasant as a maintenance supervisor and foreman.

He was an auction ringman for several years and a member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. FARRIER loved to cut wood, fish, hunt deer and mushrooms. In high school, he played the trumpet and honored veterans by playing taps (sic - Taps) for memorial services. He played football and was the class president. He was a member of the Brighton United Church and the Wayland Antique Tractor Club.

He loved his horse Manny and cared for the horses and cats on the farm until he became ill in early January, however, his greatest joy was the role of being "Papa."

Survivors include: his wife Janet; two children, daughter Kim FARRIER with Felicia Leece of Largo, Florida, and son Lee FARRIER with Lori, of St. Peters, Missouri; four grandchildren; and one brother, Orval "Bud" FARRIER of Moline.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
